Ojibwe Horses or Spirit Horses are native to Canada. It is believed that they were here when the Europeans arrived.
They were almost eradicated, but last 4 mares were smuggled to safety. Now there are almost 200.
The Aspen Ojibwe Horse Sanctuary is now home to 6 of the horses.

It is beautiful, the work that is being done to preserve and increase the numbers of the Spirit Horses.
Perhaps one day they will live wild in the woods the way they did many years ago. Until then, there are sanctuaries that nurture the horses.
It would be wonderful to go out on open sanctuary days and actually meet the horses.
