Cats and dogs keep Ukrainian troops company on the front lines

There are a number of cats and dogs keeping Ukrainian troops company. Some are the soldiers own pets, some are strays and some are pets left behind as people fled. They serve to keep up the morale of the troops. They help in pest control. The odd one can warm of incoming fire.

There is a history of animals in the trenches  of war that goes back over 100 years. Somehow animals stay with us even in dangerous situations.
It looks like the situation benefits everyone. The troops need their furry friends and they also look after them.
It is a bad situation, but cats and dogs make it more livable.
