Released goldfish are damaging our waterways
#1
People have been releasing goldfish into lakes and rivers for years. As the climate gets warmer they are thriving and multiplying. They are an invasive species that can destroy native vegetation on eat native fish. This is a problem in many places. It is certainly a problem in Ontario. We are finding goldfish everywhere.

These goldfish could destroy the entire Great Lakes fish population. Who knows what effect that would have on the animals that depend on the Great Lakes.
Invasive species of all kinds are doing damage around the world. Who knows how bad it will get because of Goldfish. They seem like such a harmless pet.
I don't think anyone thought one released fish could do harm. Only it wasn't one released fish. Many people have released them. Being goldfish, they survived and they have spawned.

I don't think we have any idea how to get rid of them.  Once again we have created a problem we don't know how to solve.
