It is not easy to study this and get clear answers, but we do know that pets grieve when another pet dies.
There are differences in the ways that different animals express their grief, but the do have grief.
Since we are the closest friend they have and we understand their loss, it is up to us to help them.
They need us to be closer reach out to them more.

I have seen some pets grieving. I took a cat to the vet and it didn't make it. When I came back without him, my other cat was very upset. I had to open every cupboard, closet, drawer, box, everything, to prove the cat wasn't hiding somewhere. The surviving cat cried for his friend daily for weeks. It was hard to see my cat so distressed.
I have had dwarf hamster pairs separated by death. They really bond, so the loss is terrible. The surviving hamster would just sit and stare and then be dead by the next day. It wasn't long enough for not eating to kill the hamster. It was grief. I had to really work hard to save a widowed hamster. I had to sit up all night holding the hamster and talk to it.
When we have a grieving pet we just have to be there and give as much as we can. It is like we have to convince our pet that there is a reason to go on.
Just being there is a comfort to the grieving one. It is very much the same as with our human friends.
Our love is the comfort they need.
