Magpie named Edmonton's city bird
#1
The Black Billed Magpie has been named Edmonton's  city bird. Over 40,000 people voted and the Magpie got 40% of the votes.
The Magpie is a member of the crow family and it lives in Edmonton year round. They are intelligent birds with lots of personality and many people think they are beautiful. Edmonton won bird friendly certification from Nature Canada, one of eight Canadian cities named. Now they need to get the city to officially recognize the Magpie as its bird.

I have lived in Edmonton and they couldn't have picked a better bird to represent the city. No matter how dark and cold the winter is, the magpie is still there.
They are pretty in a crow-like way. They are funny and clever. They always seem cheerful.
The most important thing is that they are there, when most other birds sensibly fly south.
I hope the recognition brings the birds the  respect they deserve. They certainly got the votes.
