In 2003 there were only 22 marmots left. it didn't look good for the species. The Marmot Recovery Foundation has been hard at work.
Now there are 427 Marmots in the wild.

This is a conservation story that is working towards a happy ending. By breeding the marmots in captivity and releasing them, they were able to overcome some of the effects of habitat loss. They have also worked towards habitat restoration. It is a work in progress, but it is definitely going in the right direction.
Some day the Marmots will be safely reestablished and their habitat will be restored. Conservation efforts do work.
