In the summer under certain conditions fresh water lakes will develop algal blooms. These are big mats of algae.
Sometimes they are on the surface, but often they are hidden in what appear to be clean waters.
Dogs who swim in the waters can die within minutes if they ingest the toxins.

I feel for all the dog owners who did not know the dangers and saw their dogs die suddenly after a fun swim in a lake.
Once the toxin is ingested survival is unlikely. All a dog owner can do is keep their dog away from water they are not sure of. Now that the problem is known, signs can be posted. For a number of dog owners and their dogs it is too late.
Nothing will bring back the dogs that were lost, but at least by warning people we can hope that no more dogs will be lost.
I knew about the algae, but I had no idea that it is so toxic. I am shocked by how toxic it is.
