So would a zoonotic flu outbreak. I don't know how likely such a thing would be beween dogs and humans, but I wouldn't rule it off as impossible, given those circumstances.
But I am not wishing that upon those poor dogs....although dying of a flu would probably be preferable to their eventual fate. And I would certainly not wish it upon any of their rescuers.
