Three elephants get a lawyer
#1
The title almost sounds like the beginning of a joke, but the NonHuman rights project is no joke. They have been working for years to establish personhood status for animals. They have tried with chimps and failed so far. They are not giving up. These three elephants have lived in a travelling zoo for 30 years. The lawyers have filed a writ of habeas corpus petition on behalf of the elephants, arguing that they are “legal persons” with a right to bodily liberty.  They are asking the Connecticut Superior Court to order their release to a sanctuary.

So far they have not succeeded in their petitions, but each time it goes to court the case for personhood status becomes clearer.
For these three elephants it could mean a retirement after 30 years of work. Even if the whole petition isn't granted the elephants may still be released to a sanctuary. They are getting old. They have worked long enough.
