Beagles in used pesticide tests find homes
#1
A few weeks ago we posted about a lab testing pesticides on beagles. The plan was to kill them all afterwards. The American Humane Society  made the story public and the lab ended the tests and released the remaining 32 beagles to an animal shelter.
Ten of the dogs are already living in homes and the rest are in the process of being placed.

Further to this good news is a bill being introduced by Rep. Kevin Hertel D that will require labs to make animals available for adoption. Unless there is a medical reason they will no longer be able to just euthanize lab animals when they are through with them.

It is very good news that the beagles are finding homes and living out their lives in comfort as they should. It is good that lab animals will now have to be released to shelters for adoption. This is not an end to animal testing, but it is an acknowledgement that the animals deserve to have happy lives. This will be part of ending testing on lab animals. When there are enough retired lab animals out there  in homes it will change public perception of lab animals. Once you know a former lab animal personally it will be harder to support tests done on animals. Progress is slow and the fight to end animal testing might be won, one beagle at a time, but it will be won.
