Hundreds of dogs await Yulin Dog Meat Festival

I knew Yulin was not an ancient festival, but I thought it was much older than it is. Wikipedia has a fairly detailed page. 
I might not like some parts of it, but it does have a lot of information.

I think it is a little weak on the issues of how cruelly the dogs are treated, the fact that many are stolen pets and the issue of diseases spread by the festival.

Whenever there is money involved, governments everywhere side with the source of the money.
If it became profitable to ban the festival, that would be the end of it.
