Hybrid Salmon found in Cowichan River
#1
The Cowichan river flows from Cowichan Lake to Cowichan bay on the east side of Vancouver Island.  Chinook and Coho salmon migrate up the river to spawn every fall. They spawn at different times so there is no cross breeding. However there have been droughts that delayed Chinook spawning season so that it over lapped with the Coho spawning season. So hydrids were possible.
The hybrid that was spotted was tested and it is not just a hybrid, it is the offspring of two hybrids.

Human activity and climate change have been a part of what made it possible for this hybrid to occur.
What this means for salmon species remains to be seen.

This is one of many little changes we are finding because of climate change and human activity.
Will these hybrids be healthy and able to adapt to the changing conditions. Or will they be weaker and less adaptive, but still compete with existing species and thereby reduce their chance of survival. We just don't know. All around us we are seeing changes and we do not know what is good or bad.

The salmon on the west coast of Canada are really struggling. There have been so many problems with rivers and pollution. I just hope this is not one more problem.
