BC family law no longer considers pets property during a separation and divorce.
#1
Animals were considered to be property under BC law and in a separation or divorce they were treated as property. Decisions about animals were made the way other property decisions were made. Now under BC law, animals will no longer be considered to be property. Where the animals go and who they live with will be decided  based on what is best for the animals.

This is a big legal breakthrough for animals. It is a recognition of the important part animals play in our lives. The needs of the animals will be taken into consideration. Bonds that animals have formed will be respected.

This is a positive step towards respecting animals. It is hoped that other places will adopt this model.
