Gorilla tragedy at Cincinati zoo

I am still in tears and shaking. This is such a tragic loss of life and so unnecessary.  People let their four year old son crawl under a fence, a protective guard rail and fall into the gorilla enclosure.  It is a bit of a drop so even if the enclosure had been empty it would have been a bad fall that would result in injury.
I watched the video and as far as I can see Harambe, the 17 year old male gorilla went down into the moat, to the child and was protecting him and keeping him safe from the water. He then carried the child up into the enclosure. Everybody was screaming and hysterical and given the situation the zoo shot and killed the gorilla.  

I realize they acted to be sure the child was safe, but the child should not have been able to get into the enclosure like that. He didn't just fall in, he had to work at getting to the edge. No one was watching him.

This was a death that shouldn't have happened. The child should have been supervised. If the gorilla had just ignored the child he would still be alive. He went down to the moat and appears to be protecting the child. He paid for his concern with his life.

He paid for parental inattention with his life.
